What is ESD safe in soldering

What is ESD?

ESD (electrostatic discharge) is defined as the transfer of electric charge, electrostatic discharge in short. Which takes place when two objects which have been charged to different electric potentials are brought in contact with one another or when two objects which have different electric potentials due to static induction are brought in contact with one another. Basically, if you’ve ever been shocked by another person or a door handle, that’s ESD transfer.  ESD can cause product defects as well as equipment failures which result in an unforeseen accident.

What makes a soldering station ESD safe?

ESD prevention within an EPA or (ESD Protected Area) may include using appropriate ESD-safe packing material, Wrist and Ankle straps to prevent high voltages from accumulating on a worker, anti-static mats, conductive flooring materials to conduct harmful electric charges away from the work area, conductive coatings on tools and grounding of the working surface, as well as controlling the humidity levels within the EPA.  Where insulative materials cannot be grounded, the use of an Ionizer is recommended, this will help neutralize charged surfaces on insulative materials.

Why are ESD-safe materials important?

Because ESD-safe materials reduce the discharge of static electricity, they can prevent damage to products. Should ESD occur during a production or manufacturing process, there lies the potential for costly delays or repairs. Creating ESD-safe areas – either by taking precautionary measures or by using materials that are themselves ESD-safe – can save time and money, as well as increase the efficiency of workflows and operations.

ESD Control Procedures Steps

The procedures basically involves the following 5 steps.

01. Wear an antistatic wrist strap.

02. Lay the ESD protective mat on the work bench to ground it.

03. Use the ESD protective tools.

04. Use the static eliminator (ionizer).

05. Store in antistatic bags.
